Mother-to-Be Massage

What Is Prenatal Massage?

Prenatal massage — we call it our Mother-to-Be Massage — is a full-body massage adapted for a changing body. The setup, the positioning and the pressure all change so you can rest comfortably without lying flat on your stomach or back for long.

Many guests book it for the everyday discomforts of pregnancy: a tight lower back, heavy legs, sore hips, stiff shoulders from sleeping on one side, or simply needing an hour where someone takes care of them. It isn’t medical treatment and it doesn’t replace care from your OB or midwife.

How We Position You

  • Side-lying with pillows. You lie on your side with a pillow between your knees, one supporting your belly and one under your head. Your therapist works your back, hips and shoulders from this position, then helps you turn.
  • Semi-reclined when you’d like a break. For the front of the legs, arms and neck, you can rest propped up rather than flat on your back.
  • You’re draped the whole time. Only the area being worked on is uncovered.
  • Adjust anytime. If you need to change position, use the restroom or have some water, just say so. The session is paced around you.

What Pressure Is Used?

Prenatal massage uses light-to-medium pressure with long, flowing strokes. Your therapist avoids deep, sustained pressure on the legs and uses gentle work around the lower back and hips. If an area feels too sensitive, tell your therapist and they will ease off or move on.

Who Prenatal Massage Is For

  • Second and third trimester. We welcome guests from the second trimester on.
  • Check with your OB or midwife first, and always if you have a high-risk pregnancy, preeclampsia, high blood pressure, a history of preterm labor, bleeding, or swelling that comes on suddenly.
  • Tell us when you book how far along you are and anything your provider has asked you to avoid. It all goes into your intake form so your therapist is prepared before you arrive.

If you’re unsure whether massage is right for you right now, ask your provider. We’d rather you come in a few weeks later with a clear green light.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

  1. Arrive 10–15 minutes early. You’ll fill in a short health form that includes your due date and any provider guidance.
  2. A quick check-in. Your therapist asks where you’re carrying tension, how you’re sleeping, and what pressure feels good.
  3. Settle in. Your therapist steps out while you undress to your comfort level and get onto the table with the pillows already arranged.
  4. Your massage. Back, hips and shoulders side-lying, then legs, arms, neck and scalp.
  5. Take your time getting up. Your therapist helps you sit up slowly. Drink water, and give yourself a few minutes before driving.

Prenatal Massage FAQs

Is prenatal massage safe?

For most healthy pregnancies, a prenatal massage performed by a licensed therapist with proper positioning is considered a comfortable, low-risk way to relax. We ask guests to be in their second or third trimester and to get the OK from their OB or midwife, especially with a high-risk pregnancy.

Can I get a massage in my first trimester?

We begin prenatal massage from the second trimester. It gives you time to talk with your provider first.

Will I lie on my stomach?

No. You lie on your side with pillow support, and you can rest semi-reclined for the front of the body. You won’t lie flat on your stomach, and you won’t lie flat on your back for long.

How much is a prenatal massage in Longwood?

$129 for 60 minutes or $159 for 90 minutes at Victoria Edward Spa. Beauty Bank members save on every visit.

Can I get a prenatal massage in my third trimester?

Yes, including late in pregnancy, as long as your provider hasn’t advised against it. Sessions may include more breaks and position changes as your due date gets closer.

Can my partner join me?

Yes. Book a couples massage and let us know you’re pregnant. Your therapist will set up your side of the room for a prenatal massage.

What should I bring?

Nothing special. Wear something comfortable, bring any notes from your provider, and eat a light snack beforehand.
