Not all dark spots are the same thing
Getting this right matters, because the wrong treatment on the wrong kind of pigment can make it worse rather than better.
Sun spots. Flat brown patches on the face, chest, shoulders and backs of the hands, from years of accumulated sun. These are the most straightforward to treat and respond well to brightening peels and resurfacing.
Post-inflammatory pigment. The mark left after a breakout, a scratch or an ingrown hair. It is not a scar, and it does fade on its own, but treatment speeds it up considerably.
Melasma. Larger symmetrical patches, usually across the cheeks, forehead or upper lip, driven by hormones as much as by sun. This is the one that needs the most care. Melasma is managed rather than cured, it recurs, and aggressive heat-based treatment can worsen it. If your pigment arrived during pregnancy or after starting hormonal birth control, say so at the consultation.
Why fading pigment takes longer than people expect
Pigment sits at different depths. Surface discoloration lifts relatively quickly. Deeper pigment has to migrate up through the skin before it can shed, and no treatment skips that step.
In practice that means a series rather than a single appointment, spaced roughly a month apart, and judged over three to six months. Anyone quoting one visit for dark spots is describing a photograph, not a result. Results vary by individual, by the type of pigment and by how consistently sun is avoided in between.
Sunscreen is not the aftercare, it is the treatment
This is the part people skip, and it is the part that decides the outcome. Every treatment on this page removes or disrupts pigmented cells. Sun exposure tells the skin to make more. Without daily broad-spectrum SPF, you are paying to run a race against your own biology.
